Obtain and Enforce Financial Obligations
Child support is often awarded during divorce and custody proceedings. In California, the local child support agency contacts the employer of the person ordered to pay support and requires wage garnishment so that payments are taken directly from the paychecks. If both parents want to work out payment in a different way, they can request a stay on
the garnishment.
How to Calculate Payments
In California, there are a variety of factors that contribute to the dollar amount of support. These include income, tax obligations, earning history, insurance, medical costs, disability, costs for child care, health needs of the children and the amount of time each party spends with the children.
